This is the ninth year that Halifax joins other North American cities in celebrating Asian Heritage Month.   In sharing their heritage and culture with other Nova Scotians the Asian Canadians hope to promote better understanding and appreciation of the Asian Canadian community.   The following programmes are organized by the Asian Heritage Month Committee and Halifax Public Libraries.

 

OFFICIAL OPENING CEREMONY

Proclamations of Asian Heritage Month by Mayor Peter J. Kelly, Halifax Regional Municipality, and by Premier Rodney J. MacDonald’s designate, Rosalind Penfound, Deputy Minister of Immigration, Province of Nova Scotia.


Greetings by The Honourable Mayann E. Francis, O.N.S., Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia.


There are cultural performances and displays by members of some Asian organizations and displays by Halifax Public Libraries and Bank of Montreal.

This film is written and directed by Aparna Sen.   It revolves around Mrs Meenakshi Iyer, a Tamil Iyer (a type of Hindu Brahmin), who is travelling with her son Santhanam, and Raja Chowdhury, a Muslim wildlife photographer, during a bus journey amidst Hindu-Muslim riots in India.   The film is in English with sporadic use of Tamil / Bengali / Hindi / Punjabi / Urdu.

Aspects of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Aspects of traditional Chinese medicine, including herbal medicine and acupuncture.   Ping Lu has worked at the acupuncture department of a traditional medical university in China, and includes this topic as part of the Introduction to Chinese Culture course she teaches at Saint Mary’s University.

 

The Chinese Scholar’s Studio

Presenter: Dr. Marie Elwood

 

Chinese scholars known as “the literati” regarded themselves as the embodiment of Chinese learning and culture.   Their tradition as scholar-artists reached its fullest form at the end of the Ming Dynasty (early 17th century).   This talk describes a typical studio in a scholar’s home, filled with objects that exemplified the scholar’s tastes which are part of a tradition that continues today in China.   Dr. Marie Elwood, Curator Emeritus at the Nova Scotia Museum, has been an invited lecturer at the National Centre for Ceramic Art in Jing de Zhen, China.

 

Sushi Hand Roll Workshop for Adults

In this interactive Sushi hand roll workshop you will learn simple sushi roll techniques to create this traditional Japanese food.   Best of all, you will get to eat your creations.

Chinese culture has enriched the lives of generations of Chinese people, from the earliest times to the present day.   Chinese philosophy and inventions, such as the compass, printing, gun powder, etc. have also had an impact on other civilizations.   This film is a very brief summary of the Chinese civilization.

 

Chinese Painting: The Influence of Qi Baishi

Presenter: Reimei Chung

 

The Qi painting movement originated in early 20th century China.   It uses traditional forms of Chinese ink painting, but is considered to be a more aesthetic style, with the ability to show the deeper meaning of abstraction and the beauty of concealment.   Reimei Chung will explain the influence of this art form.   Ms. Chung is a graduate of NSCAD and teaches Chinese language and culture.

Lion Dance

Presented by the Chinese Benevolent Association of Nova Scotia

 

The lion dance was originally used to pray for rain.   Now part of many Chinese celebrations, it is thought to scare away evil spirits and bring good luck and happiness.
